SOLD

This 1969 280SL was sold new in October of 1969 at ACME Motors of Traverse City, Michigan - the northern Michigan Mercedes dealer now known as Mercedes-Benz of Traverse City.  It has never been for sale outside of the Fox Motors dealership network.  Mercedes-Benz of Traverse City is part of the Fox Motors dealer family.

The original owner took delivery of the 280SL on October 3, 1969.  He used the car regularly, always coming back to the Mercedes dealership for service and making sure they stamped the service book each time.  The original owner kept the car in Florida over the winter 1970-71 and it was serviced twice during that time at the local Mercedes dealer (owned by famed racer Peter Gregg of Brumos Porsche).  In the spring of 1971, the Mercedes came back to Northern Michigan where it would remain with the original owner until August of 1982 and 78,315 miles - the last stamp in the service book.  The second owner was a doctor who lived locally in Traverse City.  He owned the car until 2004 when it was acquired by the current owner in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The 280SL is in excellent condition.  All of the paper work from the sale of the car is present including the window sticker, protect-o-plate, and build cards (see attached .pdf files below).  The paint benefited from a high quality re-spray in recent years and is clean/blemish-free.  The striking red interior complements the Ivory exterior perfectly and is complete with no rips or tears and just the right amount of patina to show that it was driven regularly but with great care.  The black convertible top is in excellent condition, as is the original hardtop. The engine bay is clean and very presentable.  The rear trunk is in excellent, original shape with the tool kit and spare tire still present as they were when the car was delivered over forty years ago.

Overall, this is a very nice, unrestored example of a well cared for 280SL with excellent pedigree and documentation from new.  This classic, convertible Mercedes is ready to offer continued enjoyment for years to come.
