SOLD: 1966 Dodge Charger 426 Hemi

Restored, 1966 Dodge Charger, numbers matching 426 Hemi, original colors and trim, Galen Govier appraisal, in excellent condition.

SOLD

Of the 37,344 Dodge Chargers built in 1966, only 468 (1.25%) wore the “426 Hemi” badge.  That was enough to satisfy NASCAR rules regulating entry into the racing series for the new ‘Hemi Charger’ and it proved a successful combination, going on to win 14 races and the NASCAR Grand National Championship for 1966.  Only 118 more Hemi Chargers were built in 1967 before a major re-styling took effect for the 1968 model year.  Even so, late 1966 models were the first U.S. production cars to wear a rear spoiler - an addition made after the early race cars exhibited significant rear-end lift on the track.

The car offered for sale here is an early 1966 Dodge Charger 426 Hemi. It has been restored and configured as produced on February 25, 1966 at the Lynch Road, Michigan assembly plant.  It came factory optioned with the 426 2-4bbl 425hp V8 “Hemi” engine, a Torqueflite Automatic Transmission (console shift), 26” radiator, Transaudio AM radio, Premium Trim in vinyl, Console, Bucket Seats, LH outside remote mirror in chrome, and stripe delete.  It left the factory in white paint with a black vinyl interior.  Additions made to this car over its life include the hood scoop (fiberglass - Dodge Hemi ‘64-‘67 type - added during restoration.) and rear spoiler (dealer added in late ‘66).  The original numbers matching engine has been rebuilt, detailed, and dyno’d.  (Details available upon request.)

The complete car is thoroughly restored (documented with receipts) and is in excellent condition. The overall presence of the car is pristine, with care and attention given to the smallest details.  Galen Govier (famed Mopar authority) appraised the car in 2004 once it was completed and commented that it was in #2 condition (“Well-restored or a combination of superior restoration and excellent original”). The car has covered less than 2000 miles since. Very few Dodge 426 Hemi Chargers exist, let alone in such wonderful condition.  This car would make a perfect ‘book-end’ addition for someone with a late model Hemi Charger or would be a welcomed addition to any MOPAR collection. This Hemi is priced well below appraised value, in show-ready condition, and ready to drive.
