SOLD
This 1972 BMW 2002 was sold new at Zipper BMW in Hollywood, California. The 1st owner took exceptional care of their new BMW, keeping every service record for the car including the 600-mile service performed at Zipper BMW in October 1972. The car was sold to its 2nd owner in 1978 (with 65,000 miles on the odometer). That 2nd owner took the BMW with them when they moved to Minnesota in the mid-80s, keeping the car until 1989 and 88,000 miles. Owner number 3 was a co-worker of the 2nd owner. They parked the BMW in 1990 due an issue with the original Solex carburetor. In 1991, the 2002 was sold to a 4th owner (also in Minnesota). That 4th owner later moved to Washington State, where the car sat in storage until the restoration began in 1994. During that restoration, the car was stripped to bare metal and painted Cinnabar Red. In 1998 the S14 (E30 M3) engine swap was completed along with other upgrades including a 5-speed gearbox and limited-slip differential (both from an E21 320i). The S14 engine is from a 1990 BMW M3 that only had 23,275 miles. In March 2010, the BMW 2002 was sold to owner number 5 in Burlingame, California. They removed the USA side marker lights and license plate light, installed a Euro rear bumper, moved the exhaust outlet to the center, and painted the car from the beltline down. At that time, the interior was updated with a leather steering wheel, red seat belts, a leather dash and center console, Scheel-Mann sport seats, and a shift knob. Other maintenance work included a new performance clutch and driveshaft flex disc (guibo). Fox Motorsports purchased the BMW from that owner in October 2010 and shipped it to Grand Rapids, Michigan. It has been under our fastidious care ever since.
While under our care, this BMW 2002 received many upgrades plus regular servicing and detailing over the last 12 years (and only had 341 miles of use)—see below for detailed info on work/upgrades. It’s always been stored in a climate-controlled environment (and no snow/salt or rain). In June 2022, the BMW was inspected/tested and had an annual fluid service including coolant and brake fluid. In July 2022, the blower motor was replaced, and the heater core pressure checked.
This BMW is well sorted and very quick. It’s in excellent condition, having been properly serviced, stored, and cared for. The paint condition is very good, with only minor blemishes due to use and age. The interior is a mix of original and updated parts. Included on the sale is a 3-ring binder containing all records since the car was new. The odometer currently shows 13,891 miles. Service records state that the odometer was rebuilt in 2003 at 98,500 miles. Actual miles are believed to be just over 113,891.
When the BMW 2002 arrived at Fox Motorsports in 2010, an in-depth inspection showed that the car was in excellent shape (confirming the pre-purchase inspection), but certain areas needed attention:
-Engine mounts were fabricated to lower the motor.
-A stronger transmission mount was fabricated and tied into the floor of the car for increased strength & rigidity.
-A new throttle cable and mounting bracket was added.
-New fuel lines were installed in the engine compartment.
-The control arm mounting points were reinforced.
-New H&R springs were installed.
-A new Ron Davis radiator was installed, and the cooling system was upgraded.
-The oil cooler was moved, and new oil lines were installed.
-The S14 engine was removed and rebuilt.
-The engine block was checked for cracks (magnafluxed) and cleaned.
-Cylinders were bored and honed.
-New pistons and rod bushings were installed and balanced.
-A new oil pan with improved capacity, cooling, and baffling was fabricated and installed.
-The engine was then assembled, tested, and installed in the car.
