This Ferrari 250 Pinin Farina (PF) Coupe was completed at the factory on January 22, 1960.  It was one of 353 PF coupes (Series I and II) built from 1958-1961 and one of 32 to be originally painted in a two-tone color scheme—top section in Nero Tropicale (black), bottom section in Grigio Argento (silver/gray).  In the late 1970s, the two-tone paint was changed to a single-tone of silver.  It has remained silver ever since with a re-spray completed in 2004.

1659GT was originally planned to be imported into the USA by Luigi Chinetti but was brought in from Europe by an R.W. Johnson, a serviceman from the Chicago suburbs.  He kept the PF Coupe until 1976 when he offered the car for sale with 25,000 miles on the odometer.  Chicago businessman J.D. Keller purchased the car and had John Hajduk/Motorkraft (based in the Chicago area at the time) rebuild the engine and fit a new clutch. Mr. Keller also had the car painted a single-tone silver and had additional brake, exhaust, fuel pump, paint/chrome work done. Mr. Keller then offered the Ferrari for sale in 1977 with 27,000 miles.  Mr. D. Korn of Racine, Wisconsin then purchased it in 1979.  Mr. Korn replaced the carpets, rewired the Borrani wheels, rechromed many parts (including the wheels), replaced the braided fluid lines, and detailed the engine. The car was then sold to Rick Mancuso at Lake Forest Sports Cars (north of Chicago) in 1983.  In 1984, 1659GT was sold to Q. B. Gustin of Evanston, Illinois.  Walnut Creek Ferrari in California offered the car for sale in 1989, sent it to auction in Las Vegas in ‘91, and continued to market the car until selling it in 1992 to R. Mummery of Miami, Florida.  B. Russinof sold the car out of Florida in 1996 and it returned to the Midwest (to a buyer in West Michigan).

In 2002, the car came under the ownership of Fox Motorsports and was sold to a local collector.  That collector had the interior tastefully refinished in dark red hides/carpets and had the exterior stripped and re-sprayed in silver.  A set of 15x7 Borrani wire wheels with Michelin XWX tires were located and installed (proper 5.5 x 400 Borrani wheels with 185 x 400 Michelin X tires are included) and upgrades were made to the exhaust. In 2006, Fox Motorsports repurchased the car for a client and added it to our collection care roster.  It was then sent off to known vintage Ferrari expert of Michigan, Terry Myr, where over $25,000 was spent taking care of electrical items, re-plating trim bits, rebuilding the brakes, radiator work, major suspension work, and other mechanical updates necessary to keep the car in excellent driving condition.

This 250 PF Coupe is structurally and mechanically very sound with approximately 9,000 miles on a rebuilt engine and just 34,758 miles from new. It starts right up with no smoke and sounds fantastic. The overdrive works properly and smoothly. It is mechanically in excellent order. The underside and engine compartment shows that it’s well maintained and in original condition. Overall, this is a solid and sorted PF Coupe with the only faults being paint and bodywork that isn’t up to the excellent mechanical state of the car and some tired interior details. It would make the perfect Ferrari 250 to drive and enjoy and then possibly perform a selective cosmetic improvement to the paint details, slightly wavy body, and interior details at a later date. It’s the opposite of an overly restored Ferrari 250 that looks fantastic but drives like it was built to only sit stationary.
